1 gibibyte (1024³) = 1.0737418 GB
1 GiB = 1.07374 GB · type math like (12*4)+6.5
GiB to GB clears up why RAM, operating systems and drive labels disagree. Linux tools, cloud VM specs and Windows report binary gibibytes, while drive boxes and some providers quote decimal gigabytes.
Cloud providers often use binary units. AWS, Google Cloud and Azure list instance memory in GiB, so an 8 GiB instance has 8.59 GB of memory. Storage volumes may be billed per GiB-month, meaning a 100 GiB volume holds 107.4 GB.
Linux command-line tools like df -h and free -h report sizes in binary units (often labelled G or Gi). Seeing 15.6 Gi of RAM on a 16 GB machine is normal once you account for units and reserved memory.
The IEC defined binary prefixes in 1998: kibi (Ki), mebi (Mi), gibi (Gi), tebi (Ti). Each step multiplies by 1,024 instead of 1,000.
The gap between units grows at larger scales. 1 KiB is 2.4% bigger than 1 kB, 1 MiB is 4.9% bigger, 1 GiB is 7.4% bigger, and 1 TiB is 10% bigger than 1 TB.
Graphics cards list memory in GB but it is binary. A GPU with 24 GB of VRAM actually has 24 GiB, which is 25.77 GB in decimal terms.
Software download sizes on Linux package managers may be shown in MiB or GiB. A 2.3 GiB ISO is 2.47 GB, so it will not fit on an old 2 GB USB stick.
Smartphone RAM is marketed in GB but is binary. A phone with 8 GB of RAM has 8 GiB, which is 8.59 GB in decimal. This difference does not matter in daily use, but it explains why system monitors sometimes show unexpected numbers.
Backup software may estimate sizes in GiB while cloud storage plans are sold in GB. A backup of 200 GiB needs 214.7 GB of cloud space, so a 200 GB plan will not quite fit it.
A quick check: the GB figure is always about 7.4% larger than the GiB figure. 64 GiB should be close to 69 GB (68.72 exactly). If your result is smaller than the GiB figure, you divided instead of multiplied. For terabyte-scale values, the gap between TiB and TB is about 10%, so always confirm which unit a dashboard or invoice uses before comparing numbers or planning storage purchases.
GB = GiB × 1.073741824
Reverse: 1 GB = 0.93132257 GiB.

16 GiB of RAM is 17.18 GB.
A 4 GiB instance has 4.29 GB of memory.
A 100 GiB partition is 107.37 GB.
A GiB is 7.37% larger. The gap grows with each prefix: TiB is 9.95% larger than TB.
Memory sold as 16 GB is really 16 GiB.
Some clouds bill storage per GiB-month and transfer per GB.
A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 2³⁰ bytes.
Origin. The IEC introduced binary prefixes like gibi- in 1998 to end the ambiguity of 'gigabyte'.
Used today. RAM sizes, Linux disk tools, cloud VM memory.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes, using the decimal SI prefix giga.
Origin. Decimal prefixes for storage became standard in the hard drive industry in the 1980s and were confirmed by the IEC in 1998.
Used today. Drive packaging and network transfer billing.
Binary. Gibi stands for giga binary, 2³⁰.
